Lockdown half guard

Also known as Lockdown — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: full name

Full name — Eddie Bravo's lockdown half guard

Lockdown half guard is the full descriptive name for the lockdown — the 10th Planet half-guard variant in which the bottom player’s legs form a figure-four around the opponent’s trapped leg to immobilise it for sweeps and back-takes.

Etymology. “Lockdown” describes the leg-locking mechanic that immobilises the trapped leg; “half guard” specifies the position-family origin. The compound is one of several names for the configuration alongside “figure-four half guard” and “10th Planet half guard.”

Mechanics. The figure-four leg loop on the trapped leg denies the opponent the ability to free the leg via standard half-guard pass attempts — the locked configuration provides the leverage for sweep and back-take sequences.

Cross-reference. “Figure-four half guard” and “10th Planet half guard” are alternate names. Full mechanical coverage on Lockdown.
