Descriptive — English form of the side triangle
Lateral triangle escape is the English descriptive form of side triangle defence, used where the Japanese vocabulary is not the house standard.
Etymology. “Lateral” translates yoko directly. The English form is more common in wrestling-adjacent no-gi rooms; the two labels are fully interchangeable and describe the same angle of attack.
Mechanics. The defining feature is that the shoulder inside the triangle is loaded from the side, which shortens the escape window compared with a front triangle. Arm recovery comes first, then posture toward the hips; stacking is available but less effective here than against the front version.
