Hip Ride

Also known as Shelf — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: Functional description

Functional — hip-leveraged shelf ride

Hip Ride is the functional name for the shelf — flagging the hip leverage that the elevated-leg configuration produces against the bottom player’s hipline.

Etymology. “Hip ride” specifies the leverage-application: the configuration drives force into the bottom player’s hipline via the elevated leg. “Ride” attaches the positional-control category. The label is one of several functional names alongside “leg shelf” and “elevated leg ride.”

Mechanics. The elevated-leg shelf transfers the attacker’s weight through the bottom player’s loaded leg into the hip — the bottom player’s hip is the load point that limits their escape mobility.

Cross-reference. “Leg shelf” and “elevated leg ride” are alternate names. Full mechanical coverage on Shelf.
