High closed guard

Also known as High Guard / Meathook — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: full name

High-feet variant of the closed guard

High closed guard is the variant-specific name for the high guard — the closed-guard variant in which the bottom player’s closed feet are positioned high on the opponent’s back (around the shoulder line) rather than at the standard hipline position.

Etymology. “High” specifies the foot position (high on the back); “closed guard” specifies the closed-leg category. The compound predominates in instructional contexts that distinguish the high variant from the standard closed guard.

Mechanics. The high-feet position breaks the opponent’s posture more aggressively than the standard closed guard — the higher leg leverage forces the opponent’s shoulders forward and opens submission setups.

Cross-reference. “Meathook guard” and “shoulder guard” are alternate names. Full mechanical coverage on High Guard.
