Half-pass position

Also known as Top Half Guard — the canonical term used on this site.

Descriptive — partial-pass half-guard configuration

Half-pass position is the descriptive name for the top-half-guard configuration — flagging the half-pass tactical state (one leg through, one leg still trapped) that the position represents.

Etymology. “Half-pass” specifies the partial-pass tactical state; “position” attaches the configuration category. The compound predominates in coaching vocabulary that emphasises the position’s intermediate-completion status.

Mechanics. The half-pass state is intermediate between full guard and full pass — the top player has one leg through the bottom player’s leg control but is not yet at side control.

Cross-reference. “Top half guard” is the perspective-oriented alternate name. Full mechanical coverage on Top Half Guard.
