Foot lift sweep

Also known as Tripod Sweep — the canonical term used on this site.

Lifting the foot to sweep the base

Foot lift sweep is a descriptive name for the tripod sweep — naming the lift of the opponent’s foot that removes their base.

Etymology. “Foot lift” describes raising the seized foot off the mat; “sweep” names the reversal. The label foregrounds the lifting action rather than the grip or the push.

Mechanics. Lifting the foot removes the opponent’s base on that side: with the support raised off the mat the opponent has nothing to stand on, so a push backward topples them in the direction the lift has unbalanced them, the bottom player following the reversal up.

Cross-reference. “Ankle grab sweep” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Tripod Sweep.
