Face-down back

Also known as Belly Down Back Mount — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: Informal — common in training contexts

Informal — back control with face-down opponent

Face-down back is the colloquial name for back-control over a prone opponent — the configuration in which the bottom player is face-down on the mat and the attacker rides the back position.

Etymology. The casual descriptor “face-down” specifies the bottom player’s head orientation; “back” abbreviates “back control.” The shortened form predominates in spoken gym vocabulary and live-coaching contexts where the longer “prone back control” or “belly down back mount” labels would be cumbersome.

Mechanics. The prone orientation makes strangle finishes more difficult because the opponent can frame against the floor, but back retention is typically easier — the opponent cannot bridge from a fully-prone posture.

Cross-reference. “Prone back control” and “belly down back mount” are alternate names. Full mechanical coverage on Belly Down Back.
