Deep overhook pass

Also known as Octopus Guard Pass — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: describes the grip being defeated

Descriptive — passing the octopus guard's deep overhook

Deep overhook pass is a descriptive name for the octopus guard pass — naming the deep overhook the octopus guard uses to trap the passer’s arm.

Etymology. “Deep overhook” names the octopus guard’s signature control, an arm hooked deep to trap the passer and threaten the back; “pass” attaches the objective. The label names the pass by the grip it must defeat.

Mechanics. The octopus controls through that deep arm-and-elbow connection; clearing the elbow connection severs the guard’s hold on the passer, removing the leverage the octopus uses to climb toward the back and freeing the passer to flatten and pass.

Cross-reference. “Octopus disengagement” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Octopus Guard Pass.
