De La Riva opening

Also known as De La Riva Break — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: same concept from the passer's frame

Frames the break as opening the De La Riva guard

De La Riva opening is an alternate name for the De La Riva break — describing the action as opening the De La Riva guard rather than breaking a grip.

Etymology. “Opening” frames the action as reclaiming the closed space of the guard; “De La Riva” names the guard, itself titled for the player whose competition use attached the name. The phrasing has no separate lineage beyond the guard it addresses.

Mechanics. The hook and grip create space the guard player occupies; disengaging contests that space and takes it back, since neither player permanently owns the space a hook creates — the break reclaims the line the De La Riva hook had established.

Cross-reference. “DLR disengagement” and “Hook removal” are sibling aliases. Full mechanical coverage on De La Riva Break.
