Training background: descriptive English
Wrestling name for top side control
Cross-body is a descriptive name for top side control — naming the pin by the top player lying across the opponent’s body.
Etymology. “Cross-body” describes the perpendicular orientation, chest across the opponent’s chest at a right angle; “side control” names the same pin. The label is the wrestling-influenced synonym for the position.
Mechanics. The pin covers the hips with chest contact and an underhook: pressing chest-to-chest while controlling the near side keeps the opponent’s hips trapped, since a pin that holds the chest but lets the hips out fails. Covering the hips with the chest-and-underhook connection is what makes side control hold.
