Counter Ashi

Also known as Mutual Ashi Garami — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: informal — when used as a defensive counter

Colloquial — counter-entanglement mutual ashi

Counter Ashi is the colloquial name for the mutual ashi — flagging the configuration as a counter-entanglement situation where one player establishes ashi and the other counters with their own ashi.

Etymology. “Counter” specifies the tactical role; “Ashi” attaches the entanglement-family. The compound predominates in coaching contexts that emphasise the counter-attack origin of the mutual-entanglement state.

Mechanics. The counter-entanglement produces a leg-attack race where both players’ tactical priority is reaching the dominant leg-attack angle first.

Cross-reference. “Criss-Cross Ashi” is the descriptive alternate name. Full mechanical coverage on Mutual Ashi.
