Etymology. The clinical phrasing is used where the injury mechanism matters more than the grappling context — coaching notes on neck safety, for instance. It makes clear that this is a spinal load rather than a joint lock, which is why the tapping guidance is stricter.

Mechanics. Cervical structures give poor and late warning under flexion load, so the correct response is positional rather than sensory: open the guard on recognition rather than waiting to judge severity. Tucking the chin early shortens the lever the attacker’s hands are working.
