Butterfly pass setup
Also known as Butterfly Hook Break — the canonical term used on this site.
Training background: when referring to break-plus-pass as a unit
Frames the hook break as the pass's first phase
Butterfly pass setup is an alternate name for the butterfly hook break — framing the hook neutralisation as the opening phase of the pass rather than a standalone action.
Etymology. “Setup” casts the break as preparation; “butterfly pass” names the objective it serves. The label has no specific lineage — it reflects the coaching habit of describing the hook break as the setup step before the actual pass.
Mechanics. Loading weight down onto the hooks compresses their structure and unloads their lifting capacity; once the hooks are structurally pinned they cannot generate the elevation the sweep needs, and the pass can advance.
Cross-reference. “Butterfly hook neutralisation” and “Killing the hooks” are sibling aliases. Full mechanical coverage on Butterfly Hook Break.
