Base up

Also known as Wrestling Up (Turtle Bottom) — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: colloquial — getting base from bottom

Informal — basing up to stand

Base up is a colloquial name for wrestling up — gym shorthand for building a base and driving back to the feet.

Etymology. “Base up” is an instructional call to establish a base and rise; it is informal coaching vocabulary for the same recovery to standing that “wrestling up” names more formally.

Mechanics. Basing up re-establishes the connection to the mat and to the opponent that standing requires: posting hands and feet rebuilds the support the bottom player lost, and that connection is the prerequisite for driving the hips up, since there is nothing to stand on until the base is reconnected.

Cross-reference. “Stand-up from turtle” and “Wrestling up from all-fours” are sibling aliases. Full mechanical coverage on Wrestling Up (Turtle Bottom).
