Backpack RNC

Also known as Standing RNC — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: Emphasises the positional context — the backpack position provides the back access

Contextual — RNC applied from backpack-style standing back position

Backpack RNC is the contextual name for a rear naked choke applied from the backpack-style standing back position — the configuration in which the attacker rides the opponent’s back from an upright orientation as the choke finishes.

Etymology. “Backpack” references the standing back-attached posture (one of the back-position metaphors); “RNC” abbreviates rear naked choke. The compound label specifies the position-from-which the choke is finished, distinguishing it from ground-position RNC variants. Coaching contexts that emphasise back-attack chains from standing engagement use this compound label.

Mechanics. The choke requires bilateral compression with the additional consideration that the opponent will fall as the compression takes effect — the attacker must manage the ride-down to maintain the position through the takedown to the finish.

Cross-reference. “Standing rear naked choke” is the full descriptive label. Full mechanical coverage on Standing Rear Naked Choke.
