Back body lock
Also known as Rear Body Lock — the canonical term used on this site.
Training background: descriptive
Descriptive — rear body lock
Back body lock is a descriptive name for the rear body lock — using “back” in place of “rear” to mark the lock taken from behind.
Etymology. “Back” and “rear” name the same position behind the opponent; “body lock” names the torso clasp. The two labels are interchangeable, “back body lock” being the plainer wording.
Mechanics. From behind, the lock controls the hips so the attacker can dump the opponent off their base; driving destabilisation to the hips is what produces the takedown, where the same lock without hip control would only ride along behind a still-balanced opponent.
Cross-reference. “Rear bodylock” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Rear Body Lock.
