Arm triangle choke

Also known as Arm Triangle (Kata Gatame) — the canonical term used on this site.

Full name — arm-triangle strangle

Arm triangle choke is the full name for the arm triangle — the front-headlock-derived strangle in which the opponent’s own near arm pressed against the throat serves as one side of the bilateral compression.

Etymology. “Arm triangle” specifies the geometric form and the trapped-arm mechanic; “choke” attaches the submission category explicitly. The full name predominates in published written material; “arm triangle” alone is the common shortened form.

Mechanics. The choke requires bilateral compression of the carotids — the trapped arm closing one side, the attacker’s arm-and-shoulder loading the other side from above.

Cross-reference. “Head-and-arm choke,” “arm triangle,” and kata gatame are alternate names. Full mechanical coverage on Arm Triangle.
