Angled Ashi
Also known as Diagonal Ashi Garami — the canonical term used on this site.
Shortened — angled ashi garami variant
Angled Ashi is the shortened name for the diagonal ashi — using “angled” to flag the off-axis hip configuration that distinguishes the variant from standard ashi garami.
Etymology. “Angled” specifies the off-axis geometry; “Ashi” abbreviates ashi garami (Japanese for “leg-entanglement”). The shortened form predominates in spoken vocabulary.
Mechanics. The angled hip configuration shifts the attacker’s leverage off-axis from the opponent’s straight-line structure — the diagonal positioning opens entries the straight ashi does not support.
Cross-reference. “Diagonal Entanglement” and “Pre-Z-Lock Position” are alternate names. Full mechanical coverage on Diagonal Ashi.
