The Dilemma
The two primary submissions of the lower leg finish on opposite foot positions. The straight ankle lock finishes on maximal plantarflexion — the toes driven away from the shin. The heel hook finishes on rotation, and rotation requires a heel the attacker can grip.
The defender therefore has two answers, and each of them is the other attack’s precondition.
- The boot — a rigid dorsiflexed ankle. It denies the plantarflexion the ankle lock needs, and it presents the heel.
- The slip — maximal plantarflexion with the foot rotated away from the direction the heel hook would break. It takes the heel out of the attacker’s line, and it hands the ankle lock the exact position it is working toward.
There is no third foot position. The ankle plantarflexes or it dorsiflexes, and whichever the defender chooses tells a reading attacker which submission is now available.
A Defender’s Dilemma, Not an Attacker’s
Every other dilemma in this collection is built by an attacker: two threats are created, the defender can answer one, and answering it opens the other. This one runs the other way. The defender holds two answers, and each answer is what makes the opposing attack available.
That inversion changes who is under time pressure. In an attacker’s dilemma the defender must choose quickly and the attacker can wait. Here the defender’s choice is not the end of the exchange but the start of the next one, and the attacker’s skill is in reading which choice was made and switching to the submission it opened. The defender is not solving a problem; they are buying a moment.
Invariants Expressed
Heel exposure is determined by leg configuration, not by grip. The entanglement position determines whether the heel is exposed for attack; the grip follows from the position.
The foot’s angle is part of that configuration, and it is the part the defender still controls once the entanglement is set. This is why the dilemma exists at all: the defender cannot change the entanglement from inside it, but they can change the foot, and the foot decides which of the two finishes is reachable.
In heel hook attacks, the rotation is applied to the knee, not the foot. The foot is the handle; the knee is the target.
The slip works on the handle rather than the target — it does not protect the knee, it denies the attacker the grip that would reach it. That is also its limit: a slip that fails to clear the heel has changed nothing about the knee and has meanwhile given the ankle lock its finishing range.
A joint attacked along its natural range of motion requires more travel to be threatened. A joint attacked across it reaches danger faster.
This is why the two horns are not equally forgiving. The ankle lock drives a joint along a range it genuinely has, so the boot has real travel to give up before anything structural is reached. The heel hook drives the knee across a range it does not have, so the slip is answering the faster of the two attacks and has correspondingly less room to be late.
Horn One: The Boot
The name is the instruction. Drive the foot through as though pushing it into a boot, and pull the toes back toward the attacker’s shoulder. The ankle finishes rigid and dorsiflexed.
What it defeats. The straight ankle lock finishes by forcing the ankle into maximal plantarflexion against a forearm seated under the Achilles. A booted ankle cannot reach that range, so the attacker’s hip extension arrives at a joint that has already run out of travel in the direction they need. Against a correctly established boot the submission does not become harder; it becomes unavailable.
What it costs. A dorsiflexed foot presents the heel. Everything the heel hook needs is a heel the attacker can take hold of, and the boot supplies one.
Horn Two: The Slip
Maximal plantarflexion, with the foot rotated away from the direction the heel hook would break. The toes point away and the heel travels out of the attacker’s line.
What it defeats. A heel hook cannot rotate a heel it cannot hold. The slip removes the handle rather than protecting the knee, which is why it has to be early — once the grip is closed the heel is no longer the defender’s to move.
What it costs. Maximal plantarflexion is the straight ankle lock’s finishing position. A defender who slips against an attacker who was never hunting the heel has moved into the other submission unprompted.
Practical Application
For the defender: neither answer is a resting place. The boot and the slip both buy time and neither ends the exchange, so the escape has to follow immediately. A defender who sets a rigid boot and then settles has simply chosen which submission they will eventually be caught by. Effective defence treats the foot position as the first beat of an escape sequence — boot or slip, then clear the knee line and take the leg out — rather than as a position to hold.
For the attacker: bait the reaction. Because the defender’s two answers are visible and exclusive, a threat is worth making for the response it produces rather than the finish it might land. Threatening the ankle lock draws the boot, and the boot serves the heel; threatening the heel draws the slip, and the slip serves the ankle. The high-level version of this exchange is not a race to finish one submission but an attempt to make the defender commit to a foot position, and then to attack the one they have just opened.
This is also why the pair should be taught together. A defender who learns the boot alone will use it against heel hooks, and a defender who learns the slip alone will use it against ankle locks. Each is a correct technique applied to the submission it feeds.
