Leg Entanglement Entries
All Entry Routes into the LE Cluster
The leg entanglement system is entered from a range of positions — ground-based guard entries and standing entries. This hub maps every documented entry route, which positions they lead to, and the ability level at which each entry is appropriate to study.
All entries lead to elevated-risk submission territory. Before drilling any of these entries, read the tapping culture page and understand the safety profile of the positions you are entering.
Ground Entries
Ground entries are initiated from seated or guard positions. These are the primary entry routes for most practitioners — the standing entries (below) are advanced techniques with higher risk profiles.
Shin-on-Shin
The fundamental ground entry — shin contact to SLX or ashi garami. First entry to study.
Single Leg X
SLX guard — the ground-based precursor to ashi garami and outside ashi.
K-Guard
Inside heel hook entry guard — designed specifically to expose the inside heel via cross ashi.
The Reap
Inside leg thread — enters ashi, outside ashi, or cross ashi.
False Reap
Outside leg thread — four-way entry: ashi, outside ashi, cross ashi, or 50/50.
Outside Ashi — Standing
Transitional standing context — leg captured before opponent is on the mat.
Reverse Guard
Facing-away guard — direct access to outside ashi and the 70/30.
Standing Entries
Standing entries go from standing or clinch directly into leg entanglement positions. The Imanari roll, flying triangle, and flying armbar all carry elevated risk — both from the downstream submissions and from the counter-risk inherent in committing from standing.
Guard Pull
Deliberate strategic entry to guard — pull destination determines everything.
Imanari Roll
Rolling inverted from standing — immediate ashi, cross ashi, or 50/50 access on landing. High-risk.
Flying Triangle
Standing-to-triangle — upper body submission entry. Counter-risk: slams.
Flying Armbar
Standing-to-armbar — highest-risk standing entry. Elite-only.

Recommended Learning Sequence
- Read first: Tapping Culture — before any leg entanglement drilling.
- Ground entry 1: Shin-on-Shin → Ashi Garami
- Ground entry 2: Single Leg X → Outside Ashi
- Guard system entry: The Reap and False Reap — once ashi and outside ashi are functional.
- K-Guard system: K-Guard → Cross Ashi — Proficient level, after understanding the inside heel hook.
- Standing entry: Guard Pull — Foundations. The others (Imanari, flying submissions) are Advanced/Elite.
